Hair loss can begin to happen at any age and can happen because of a variety of different causes. At a young age, you can begin to lose your hair at the front, your hairline can begin to mature and your hairline will become slightly higher. This receding hairline, when it is just a mature hairline, is a natural part of growing up so mature hairline is nothing to worry about and it does not mean you need a hair transplant.
For many people that experience excessive hair loss, a hair transplant can help bring back a full, or at least a fuller head of hair. If thinning up top or going bald really bothers you, the procedure can be one way to feel more confident about your looks. You should talk to your doctor about what you can expect during and after the surgery.
There is no set age on when is the best time to get a hair transplant but in some cases you might be too young and your hair loss may not be severe enough to undergo a hair transplant treatment.
The two most popular types of hair transplants are Follicular unit strip surgery (FUSS) and Follicular unit extraction (FUE). FUSS involves removing a strip of skin from a non-bald area, usually in the back of the head. The cut is then closed and hidden by the surrounding hair. On the other hand, FUE surgery involves shaving the back of the head and then removing individual hair follicles, as opposed to taking an entire strip of scalp.
With FUSS the strip of scalp that is removed is divided into tiny sections called grafts, each containing just one hair or a few hairs (there can be as many as 500 to 2,000 tiny grafts, each with an individual hair or just a few hairs). These grafts are each relocated to the balding areas being treated, known as the recipient sites. One of the main disadvantages of FUSS transplant technique is that it typically leads to scarring around the donor site. Some patients may also experience pain and swelling in this area.
If you’re getting the FUE procedure, the surgeon’s assistants will have to shave the back of your scalp and then the doctor will remove hair follicles one by one from there. After that point, the procedures is very much like the previously described FUSS. After he prepares the grafts, the surgeon cleans and numbs the area where the hair will go, creates holes or slits with a scalpel or needle, and carefully places each graft in one of the holes. What makes FUE so remarkable is the way hairs are implanted: surgeon will carefully map your hair growth before implantation so he or she would know where and on what angle to place each follicle. The results possible are of the highest quality and naturalness and undetectable which is the most significant advantage. Also, FUE transplant surgery is often more expensive than FUSS.
Depending on the size of the transplant, the process will take about 4 to 8 hours. You might need another procedure later on if you continue to lose hair or decide you want thicker hair.
After the surgery, your scalp may be quite sensitive. You may need to take pain medications for several days. Your surgeon will have you wear bandages over your scalp for a few days and the doctor may prescribe an antibiotic to prevent infection, or an anti-inflammatory to stop swelling. Most people are able to return to work 2 to 5 days after the operation.
Within 2 to 3 weeks after surgery, the transplanted hair will fall out (most of the transplanted hair will fall out within 6 weeks of the surgery), but you should start to notice new growth within a few months. It is important to remember that you should avoid direct sunlight for 14 days after your treatment.
The cost of a hair transplant varies greatly and depends on several factors. The price of a hair transplant will depend largely on the amount of hair you’re moving and other factors such as the type of hair transplant procedure, surgeon skill, location, travel cost etc.
